IP Telephony, or phone service via internet protocol, is part and parcel of the digital revolution that began with computing and continues to benefit business.
Telephony is the general use of equipment to provide voice communication over long distances. IP, of course, is internet protocol, or the rules that govern the transmission of data. The term VOIP, or voice over internet protocol, is often used interchangeably with IP telephony. Technically, VOIP refers to the method to transmit voice across a network, while IP telephony is the telephony system itself.
Telephones were originally connected to each other directly; exchanges arrived with the increase in phone lines. Fax and data transmission was introduced in the latter 20th Century. Today, IP telephony is the modern version of telephony. Through computer telephony integration, or CTI, computers are now capable of controlling common phone functions such as making and receiving fax, data and voice calls, along with caller identification and telephone directory services. This integration of telephone software and computer systems is a major development in the evolution of many automated offices in Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego and Riverside counties.
As with any internet protocol telephony service, one of the chief advantages is cost savings. Businesses that conduct business internationally are able to cut their telephone bills by as much as 80 percent, because long distance calls and local calls are similarly priced. Calling Rome is generally the same rate as if you were calling Glendale or Yorba Linda.
